hi i'm really new to this forum but was hoping someone would know............i broke my bokken that was given to me from my master many many years ago. the first thing that went through my mind was sorrow and then if there was anything i should do with the pieces. That is my question......it broke in my hands and i FEEL that some thing should be done more than just tossing away. Anybody?

I think if I had something like your bokken that I felt strongly about, I would make it into a short sword or a tanto, perhaps as for use in training or maybe as a keepsake. I would cut it close to the size and shape needed and then finish shaping it with a rasp and finally sanding it and applying tongue oil. It could be a nice way to keep something of the old. I would also buy a new bokken.

Hi Ryu112,

Another way would be to find a display case or wall-mount shadow box large enough to mount the broken pieces in.  Personally,  I would add a small plaque just below the broken bokken explaining the life of this bokken and why it's special.

A bit more ornate, but definitely less useful then Sensei Mark's suggestion.   Grin
