September 20, 2005. Saint Louis Ki Society received notification of approval for a grant to continue the
WellChild Ki-Aikido Program at
Neighborhood Houses' St. James Center in the College Hill Neighborhood of north St. Louis.
This funding is made available from the US Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. It was provided through a grant from the
Missouri Department of Public Safety and the
Juvenile Justice Advisory Group.
The total amount granted is $11,253.10. This provides funds for a teacher and an assistant for three classes per week during the school year as well as two week-long “Summer Samurai” programs. It will supply uniforms and other training supplies, printed materials, supporting presentations for parents, rank testing and evaluation.
The WellChild Ki-Aikido program focuses on developing calmness and relaxation, improving posture, movement and body language, and exploring attitudes and beliefs about aggression and violence. The program at St. James Center started last year and is the newest WellChild Program operated in collaboration with Neighborhood Houses. St. Louis Ki Society began a WellChild Program at Neighborhood Houses’ Dignity House over 3 years ago as a part of that center’s after-school program.
The Saint Louis Ki Society provides a range of programs based on the martial art Aikido and the mental disciplines of Yoga. The Society’s main location is on the west edge of the City of St. Louis where regular programs for children and adults have been conducted since 1979.
