The chance of rain for our morning demonstrations on Sunday and Monday are way down, so weíll be fine.

Because of the chance of rain this afternoon, the move of mats to the Gardens is now scheduled for 9 am tomorrow morning. We have five people planning to meet to unload the mats in and set up for the first demo. Another person or two would help.
We will meet at 9 am at the southwest gate on Tower Grove Ave, just south of Botanical Ave. Itís  near the far southeast corner of the park, a little south of Botanical Ave. This gate is kept locked, but will be opened for us to drive in with the mats. Unless you are there at the time the gates are open you wonít be able to get in there. This area is for unloading only, no parking for the festival. You can park using your parking pass, use your participants pass to enter the gardens, and then walk towards the far southeast corner of the park , past the Lehman Lawn wear the demonstration will take place, down the sidewalk to the unloading area inside the gate. Take note that if you arrive at the Gardens at 9 am, go to park, walk into the gardens and all the way to the Lehman lawn, you may arrive just in time to help finish up, stand back and say, well done people! ;>)

Near the northwest corner of the Gardens, to the west of the Temperate House (it may be a winding walk through) there is an employee area with a deck leading to lunchroom through which is a dressing room. Next year maybe I should see if we can use the lockers.

Thanks to everyone who have been working on this.
Letís plan on having some fun, too.

As most active students have heard in classes, we need some members to help with some of the logistics for our demonstrations at the Japanese Festival. It's time to organize the volunteer time.
Check the details below and either put you name on the appropriate list at the dojo, Call (314) 726-5070 and leave a message about which time you can help, or email contact @stlki.org.

Here are some details.

  • 1) After class on Saturday, August 30, we will load the portable mats for transport to the Gardens. Class ends at noon, and by about 12:30 we can start loading from the basement onto a trailer. We'll needs at least 3 and can use up to 5 people.  It will also be helpful to have one more vehicle such as a van or pickup truck available.
  • 2) Meet at the Botanical Garden at 5:30 to unload mats. 4 or 5 people are needed.
The mats will be taken through the Gates on the east side of the gardens near the south end of the gardens, at Tower Grove Ave just south of Botanical Ave.
If you attend the Festival on Saturday afternoon, then walk to the Lehman Lawn and keep going south until you get to the parking area where the gate is.
If you are not in the Gardens, you may be able to park on the street near the gate, or in the Tower Grove Baptist Church parking lot across the street.
  • 3) Put down a tarp and mats for the demonstration at the Lehman Lawn at 9:45 am Sunday and Monday. 7 or 8 people are needed.
  • 4) Take up a tarp and mats after the demonstration at the Lehman Lawn at 11:45 am Sunday and Monday. 7 or 8 people are needed.
  • 5) Take up a tarp and mats after the demonstration at the Lehman Lawn at 3 pm Monday and load them for return to the Dojo. 6 people are needed.
  • 6) Meet at the dojo to unload mats at about 4 pm. 4 to 6 people needed.

It will also be helpful to have one more vehicle such as a van or pickup truck available for transport to and from the Gardens, before and after the event (items 1 and 6 above).

Free parking and festival passes are available for volunteers at the dojo.

Saint Louis Ki Aikido is sorry to announce that the Kids Aikido Program has been suspended for one to two years.

Our Head instructor is no longer employed by St. Louis Ki Aikido. With limited time, he will continue much of his teaching and management work on a volunteer basis. From 2001 to 2007 St. Louis Ki Aikido Kids Aikido Program was at its peak with 8 kids classes per week at three locations, summer camp sessions and more. While our Head Instructor was the primary teacher and manager, the kids program was also dependent on volunteer assistants and teachers. The loss of key volunteers, the loss of major grant funding and the broad economic recession have changed quite a few things with our school.

In the past few years the program has not been everything it should be. It's time to work on changing that. We will be recruiting and training volunteers. We will be developing a new marketing/outreach plan. We will also explore the possibility of collaboration with other organizations and schools. Through these efforts we want to develop the size and number of classes makes the program exciting and successful. We may even return to having classes for two age groups.

We hope to come back with a greatly improved Kids Aikido Program as soon as possible. Part of our mission is to provide training for children.

THE NEXT 5-DAYS of AIKIDO WILL BEGIN SEPTEMBER 6th.

What a great way to get a taste of training with the Saint Louis Ki Aikido...come to class 5 days in a row!
Saturday, September 6th to Wednesday, September 10th.

New students are invited to come to classes starting on Saturday, September 6th. Then come to class on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. All for only $25. The classes will be at our regular class-times. There will be no classes on Sunday and Monday of Labor Day Weekend, August 31 and September 1.

Instead, Saint Louis Ki Aikido will be at the Missouri Botanical Gardens performing Aikido demonstrations for the Japanese Festival.
Since 1977, celebrating the history, culture, and people of Japan, the Japanese Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden is one of the largest and oldest festivals of its kind in the United States.
Come join us at the festival.

There will be class on Saturday, August 30 at the usual time. Help is needed after class to load our portable mats in preparation for taking them to the Japanese festival later in the afternoon.

Due to the Fair Saint Louis, classes are canceled for Saturday, July 5th. The neighborhood streets will be barricaded, though I'm told that it's okay to move them to drive through. The Fair ends Saturday. so there will be Advanced Aikido class on Sunday. Nope, no class on Sunday either.

The dojo/yoga center parking lot will have cones and signs set out to indicate parking for Aikido and Yoga only. Students/staff who are attending the fair may park there if you wish.
